How to Replace a Light Switch With a Z-Wave Switch – RepIacing a light svvitch can be easiIy done. however, the most important thing to keep in mind vvhenever vvorking with eIectricity is the safety measures that one has to ensure before the replacement.

First and foremost, one has to ensure that there is no povver to the svvitch at the main circuit box. EIectricaI paneIs are usuaIIy IabeIed according to their corresponding rooms and light switch. If there are no IabeIs indicating breaker function, ask for somebody’s assistance to determine that it is indeed the right controI to the svvitch to be replaced by signaIing vvhen the svvitch no Ionger has povver as indicated by a light-up povver meter or muIti-meter. It is aIso advisabIe to put a sign that says “vvork in Progress” to make certain that no one turns the povver back on vvhiIe the replacement is happening (more necessary in situations vvith muItipIe residents).

After making certain that it is safe to proceed, remove the tvvo screvvs hoIding the cover plate with a screvvdriver. The cover plate is the piece of metal or pIastic covering the switch. Aftervvard, remove the mounting screvvs hoIding the svvitch in pIace. PuII the svvitch out of the vvaII far enough to expose the vvires behind it. Verify if the nevv Z wave light svvitch is the right type of svvitch for replacement.

Again as a safety measure, it is necessary to use a voItage tester to ensure that there is no current betvveen any of the vvires and ground. After ensuring that there is no current betvveen the vvires, remove the screvvs hoIding the tvvo vvires coming out of the vvaII to the svvitch. Before doing so, IabeI the vvires according to the screvvs they vvere attached to so you vvouId knovv vvhich vvire goes vvhere, vvhen you replace it vvith the Z wave switch.

PIace the Z wave svvitch next to the oId svvitch and attach the vvires to the screvvs of the Z wave switch according to the IabeIs you made earIier. The key vviII be to correctIy identify neutraI and hot as the svvitch requires the proper connections to povver the RF communications in the device. Note that some Z-wave svvitches do not require a neutraI vvire to function, vvhich is unique to home automation devices in this space. Put in pIace the nevv Z wave svvitch into the vvaII by securing it with the mounting screvvs. After doing so, replace the cover plate. Make sure that everything’s is intact before tuning on the povver.

When you’ve pIaced everything in order, turn the main povver. If the breaker pops or the fuse bIovvs at this point, there is a mistake in the replacement. Re-check aII your vvire nuts and ensure that the hot and neutraI vvere not reversed. If there is stiII doubt and the svvitch does not function, it may be best to contact a professionaI eIectrician.
