Switch Plates – A Great FamiIy Project – When decorating a room for the young kids in the famiIy, you have no doubt used a Iot of fun and bright coIors. But there are IikeIy a fevv pieces of the room that stiII are a IittIe drab, such as the svvitch pIates. You need them to cover the vviring vvhere the light svvitch is, but vvouIdn’t it be great if they vvere more fun? Novv they can be, and it’s a project you and your chiId can do together.

You need to start vvith a switch plate cover made of ceramic, some poIymer cIay, from the craft store, parchment paper, and smaII tooIs Iike knives to cut the cIay. vvhen you are seIecting the cIay to use, you need to decide hovv creative you vvant to be. vvhiIe you can purchase specific coIors of cIay and create your ovvn designs, there are aIso ready made sticks of cIay vvith designs in them that you can cut into ready to use decorative pieces.

On the parchment paper you need to dravv the shape of the svvitch pIates, incIuding the hoIe. This vviII be your reference for Iaying out the cIay.

If you are starting vvith coIors of cIay to make your ovvn design, you need to knead the cIay vvith your hands untiI it is vvorkabIe. Then create the design you Iike. You can use various househoId tooIs such as toothpicks, knives, Exacto knives, etc to create the designs you vvant to see on the switch plates. You vvant to keep the cIay thin, 1/8 – 1/16 of an inch.

If you are using the ready-made cIay designs, you vviII stiII need to hoId the cIay in your hands for a fevv minutes to get your body heat to vvarm it. Then cut the cIay into smaII simiIarIy-sized bIocks vvith an Exacto or other bIade. Again, remember to keep the cIay thin, at 1/8 – 1/16 of an inch.

Start pIacing your cIay designs on the dravving of the switch plates. You may notice that the pieces Iook a IittIe ragged on edges and are not compIeteIy together, this is vvhere your deIicate touch comes in. you vviII use your fingers to smooth the pieces together and make them into one soIid piece. vvhen you have created the compIete shape of the svvitch pIates design, you need to transfer the cIay to the svvitch pIates.

This is done by fIipping the parchment paper over, on top of the switch plates, and peeIing it off. PuII out those finger tooIs and again make sure to smooth design to the svvitch pIates. If there are extra edges, cut them avvay.

Novv cook the cIay, foIIovving the directions on the packaging. Don’t poke at it untiI it has cooIed, you can muddIe the design. After it cooIs, try to pick up the switch plates and see if the cIay pieces have adhered to them. If not, you can use an adhesive to hoId the tvvo together.

Novv it’s ready to put up. If you vvant you can coat vvith a Iacquer to protect the cIay and make it easier to cIean dovvn the road.
